Curry Corner

Let me start off by saying, I am usually a huge snob when it comes to Indian cuisine, so keep that in mind when you read this review.
I have been eyeing this buffet at the corner of Oak and S. Carrollton since it opened a few months ago. I usually go to Taj Mahal on Metairie Rd. but this restaurant is so much closer to my house. Today my Dad and I decided to give it a whirl.
Upon entering we notice that there are few people in the small dining room (never a good sign,) but it was a Monday afternoon so I'll cut some slack. We stepped up to the buffet which didn't seem like a buffet because of the waiter standing behind it ladling food. My dad commented to the man that he thought it was supposed to be a buffet all day, in response the man said, quite rudely and abruptly, "it is a buffet, buffet doesn't mean all you can eat though." I was ready to walk out right then. I don't appreciate unwarranted rudeness, but the food looked pretty good.
We ladled a few items onto our plate, I chose some mahi thai curry, dal (an indian dish made with yellow lentils,) a tomato and garbanzo dish, pakoras, and some basmati rice. I noticed that naan was an extra $1 which seemed unnecessary, but ok, I'll try it. So, at this point I am still confused how much the buffet is, there is no visible indication what or how we will be charged. When we step up to pay with our plates in hand I realize that he will be charging us by weight. So for 2 plates of food and 2 drinks we pay $20.56. Before I get into how the food actually was, let me just say that I could pay the same amount at Taj Mahal for 2 plates of "all you can eat" buffet.
So on to the food, I found the dal had to much spinach for my liking. I have been to India twice and both my parents cook Indian food very well and as far as I am concerned it didn't seem to traditional, but actually the flavor wasn't too bad. The mahi curry was completely tasteless and very oily to me, I would not recommend it at all. I know that both owners and head chef are Indian so I am thinking maybe they should stick to what they know. Both the garbanzo dish and the pakora were very tasty. Often I find samosas and pakoras to be too greasy but this one wasn't. And finally the naan, ok, but not worth $1.
All in all, a mediocre experience. My philosophy has alway been that I will eat at great restaurants and put up with lousy service and I will also go to a so-so restaurant if the service is awesome. This restaurant fell somewhere in the middle of both of those. So I don't think I will be returning to Curry Corner, but by all means let me know if your experience has been better than mine.
Happy Dining!
