Shake Shack

For our farewell meal in New York we decided to make it easy and greasy, enter Shake Shack. Shake Shack is a literally a fancy metal shack in Madison Square Park that does burgers, fries, hot dogs, shakes, custard, well you get the idea. I, in no way expected it to be quite as popular as it is. We showed up around 2:30 and waited in a half hour line. Thankfully it was a beautiful afternoon. We changed our minds about 3 times about what to order and we finally settled on a Shack-ago dog, a Shake Shack burger with fries and a black and white shake (in tribute to the late MJ.)
The wait for our food wasn't quite as painful as the wait in line, maybe about 10 minutes. Too bad we didn't realize how small all the portions were before we left the line because I left hungry. Now that doesn't mean that it wasn't good, but keep in mind that the burgers and dogs aren't enormous. The Shack-ago dog was an excellent take on the traditional Chicago style hot dog- an all beef frank, hot peppers, cucumbers, onions, celery salt and mustard all on a poppy seed bun... yummy. The Shake Shack burge is a typical cheese burger using their own ground beef consisting of sirloin and brisket. And fries are, well they are fries.

Now the thing that was pretty cool to me was their custard. You see, we don't have custard in New Orleans, so the concept is pretty foreign to me. Anyway, every month they change their "custard calendar." Each day of the week has it's own flavor, I really wanted to taste June's Thursday flavor (earl grey,) but it was Tuesday, which was cucumber mint. I wasn't in the mood for cucumber custard at that moment, so that's why we went with the black and white shake, very good choice!
So all in all a good meal, maybe not worth the wait, but if you are in the park and want to hang out on a beautiful day it is a good spot to do so. And they have beer and wine, how cool is it to be able to drink in the park in New York?
Happy Dining!
