Nine Roses (Hoa Hong 9)

Why is it that Vietnamese restaurants in New Orleans are closed on random days of the week? I was in the mood for Pho Tau Bay today and I couldn't have it. I settled for Nine Roses and was pleasantly surprised by the food. I had only been once before, and I was a vegetarian at the time so there was much that amused me on their extensive menu, but today we was definitely different.
I noticed they had soda chanh on their menu, like Pho Tau Bay, but it was made with lemons instead of limes. I was expecting generic lemonade but instead it was fresh lemons and sugar at the bottom of my glass, covered in club soda, quite refreshing. We started with the vegetarian spring rolls which had fried tofu, lettuce, vermicelli noodles, and a healthy amount of mint in them. I enjoyed their peanut sauce a lot too, it was darker in color than most other Vietnamese restaurants, I am not sure what makes their sauce different but it was the best I have had in this city.

Moving on to entrees, we had a char-grilled lemon grass beef vermicelli bowl and roasted quail with steamed buns. I had been craving those steamed buns since Momofuku in New York, so when I saw them on the menu I jumped at the opportunity to experience the light, airy dough again. There were 5 moist, well seasoned little quails and 5 little buns to make mini sandwiches with, and they did not dissapoint. The only thing that would've made this dish better is maybe a side of cilantro and pickled carrots. The vermicelli bowl was pretty standard as far as vermicelli dishes go. It had the pickled carrots, mung bean sprouts, and cucumber at the bottom of the bowl and a side of fish sauce. I did, however, prefer the char-grilled beef to how it's normally prepared. It gave the dish a nice smokey flavor.

So obviously we over-ordered but it was all incredible. I will no longer shun Nine Roses when it is presented as an option. In fact, I am looking forward to my next visit.

Happy Dining!
